Alberta’s NDP Leader Brian Mason today pledged that his caucus would oppose Conservative Party legislation ratifying the Trade and Investment Mobility Agreement (TILMA).
“This trade agreement allows business to sue governments if they take any action that infringes on their profits,” said Mason. “That means Alberta can be sued if the government introduces environmental regulations, rent controls, or even control the costs of power or auto insurance.”
Mason said the government claims TILMA will remove inter-provincial trade barriers, but notes that they are already quite minimal.
“TILMA is really a corporate bill of rights,” said Mason. “But business profits shouldn’t come before the needs of regular families.”
