Energy

It’s important that Albertans stay informed about changes that affect their monthly energy bills.
Our energy sector is also closely tied to our environment: the longer we continue to rely on fossil fuels, the greater the cost to our water supply and air quality.
Alberta’s NDP Opposition supports investment in green energy initiatives, which will create jobs and maintain our position as an energy leader in North America.
Shifting our dependence away from fossil fuels toward sustainable energy sources like wind and solar power will provide Albertans with the energy they need, in a way that does less harm to the environment.
We advocate for better oversight and increased public consultation on energy issues like electricity transmission upgrades, and oilsands development.
Alberta’s deregulated energy market pits Albertans against companies who seek to provide energy at a profit. We oppose policies that use public money to subsidize these companies, like the government’s $2 billion plan to help private corporations develop carbon capture and storage.
The NDP caucus believes that Albertans need reliable sources of clean energy, at affordable and predictable rates. Energy investments should benefit rate payers first – not corporations.
