Economy and Jobs

Alberta’s economic performance is overly dependent on energy markets. When oil and gas prices fall, our bottom line suffers.
Progressive Conservative governments routinely respond to this pressure by cutting jobs and services Albertans depend on. It’s an unsustainable economic strategy that must change.
Alberta’s NDP Opposition has proposed several solutions to reduce our dependence on fossil fuel markets.
One way to ensure economic growth is by diversifying our economy.
Expanding our energy markets to include more sources of renewable energy will create more jobs, and position us to remain an energy leader in Canada and North America.
Maintaining investment in public infrastructure is also important. Building and maintaining roads, schools, and hospitals keeps Albertans working, and maintains public services Albertans rely on.
Alberta's NDP Opposition is also determined to keep up the fight to reduce the export of unprocessed bitumen to the United States. Thousands of jobs can be created by adding value to bitumen in Alberta at upgraders and refineries.
The NDP caucus is also opposed to subsidizing carbon capture projects with public dollars, and believes in the "polluter pays" principle. Oil and gas companies must be held responsible for the amount of greenhouse gasses they produce, and will profit from the sale of sequestered carbon. These companies should pay to develop carbon capture technology, not the public.
