NDP calls on province to match donations for Pakistan

EDMONTON – NDP leader Brian Mason is calling on the Stelmach government to match donations from Albertans for the relief effort in Pakistan, following flash flooding that has claimed the lives of over 1,600 Pakistanis.

“Pakistan is experiencing one of the worst natural disasters in recent history and is in desperate need help,” Mason said.

“Alberta’s Pakistani community is making a tremendous effort to offer aid. The province should do the same by matching aid donations from all Albertans,” Mason said.

Mason added that Albertans have a strong tradition of contributing to worldwide relief efforts, and were quick to offer aid following the Indonesian tsunami of 2005 and the Haitian earthquake early this year.
